Expectations for Voice & Piano Students and Families

1. All students should find at least 3 hours per week for warm-up and practice of assigned repertoire. This does not have to be 1 hour at a time but 15-20 minutes or perhaps a half hour at a time so not to tax the voice.

2. Students should be open and willing to try different styles of repertoire and genres of music. I will take the students’ recommendations under consideration and allow them to work on pieces that they are interested in as long as it is appropriate for their instrument and level.

3. If a voice student is given a piece from a musical or opera, the student is expected to do character research. How to accomplish this will be discussed in the lesson.

4. If assigned a music theory assignment, please have completed by next lesson.

5. Lessons may be cancelled or rescheduled due to sickness or family emergency on the day of the scheduled lesson but preferably at least 24 hours beforehand.

6. All other cancellations must be at least 24 hours in advance. Please understand that while singing might be a hobby to the student, teaching voice lessons is part of my livelihood. Please understand that any cancelled lesson is a scheduled time that I have prepared and planned for in which I receive no compensation.

7. Students may have lessons once per week or every-other-week/twice a month, as long as the schedule is as consistent as possible.

8. If possible, it would make accounting easier for me if each family could pay for the month’s lessons at the first lesson of the month. I recognize this will not be possible for everyone but for those that are able, that would greatly help my organizational skills.

9. If your student’s voice studies need to be on hold or cancelled all together, I ask for two weeks notice whenever possible.

NOTE REGARDING SCHEDULING: I realize that my teenage students have very busy lives with many commitments. I strive be as flexible and understanding as possible and hope you will be as well. Of course there will be times when we will both need to be more flexible than normal but the above guidelines are the expectations for which to aim.
